OUR APPROACH

About the 7% Escape Map

This project started with a simple question: Where, exactly, can you live well in Italy and pay only 7% tax?

The answer lies somewhere between policy and geography. The Escape Map cross-references Italian tax authority guidelines with ISTAT data to surface towns that may qualify. Each dot on the map represents a real place where life moves slower, meals last longer, and your retirement money goes further.

We've layered in open data for amenities like cafés, pharmacies, hospitals, and markets so you can compare towns side-by-side. The information is accurate to national datasets but may differ slightly from Google's listings—because this isn't a travel app, it's a decision tool.

Why Our Data Differs from Google Maps

Google Maps includes user-submitted businesses and paid listings. We use standardized open-source datasets (OpenStreetMap, ISTAT) to ensure consistent, comparable metrics across all towns. This approach costs significantly less and provides apples-to-apples comparisons—but it means some newer or smaller establishments may not appear in our counts. If completeness is critical for your research, we recommend cross-referencing with local sources during your scouting visits.

Data is sourced from published open-source repositories including OpenStreetMap and may not include all establishments found in commercial databases like Google Maps. We use standardized data sources to provide consistent, comparable metrics across all towns. Always verify critical information with local authorities before making relocation decisions. Tax advice should be sought from qualified Italian tax professionals.
